    හැම කතාවකම හදවත හිරු. හැමදේම දැනගන්න ආසයි, හැමදේම දැන්මම කරන්න ආසයි. හිරු කියන්නේ ඉර, ඒ නිසා එයාගෙ ටී ෂර්ට් එකේ පොඩි ඉරක් තියෙනවා.Hiru is the heart of every story: curious about everything, and in a hurry to do it all right now. Hiru means “sun”, so there's a little sun on his orange t-shirt.

    තරු හිරුගෙ ලොකු අක්කා. හිරුට උදව් කරනවා, ඒත් ටිකක් විහිළු කරන්නත් ආසයි. තරු කියන්නේ තාරකාව, ඒ නිසා එයාගෙ ටී ෂර්ට් එකේ කහ පාට තරුවක් තියෙනවා.Tharu is Hiru's big cousin. She helps him out, and she likes to tease him a little too. Tharu means “star”, so there's a yellow star on her lilac t-shirt.

    චුට්ටන් කියන්නේ අපේ ගෙවතුවල ඉන්න පුංචි බට්ටිච්චා කුරුල්ලෙක්ගෙ පැටියෙක්. බට්ටිච්චලා කොළ මහලා කූඩු හදනවා. චුට්ටන් කතා කරන්නේ පොඩි අයත් එක්ක විතරයි. එයාට පළතුරු කන්න හරි ආසයි, රහසක් තියාගන්න නම් බෑ.Chuttan is a baby tailorbird, the tiny bird of Sri Lankan home gardens that sews leaves together to make its nest. He talks only to the kids. He's cheeky, greedy for fruit (he's sure he's a fruit bird) and a terrible secret-keeper.

    හවස් වරුව අත්තම්මගෙ. ඉස්කෝලෙ ඇරිලා හැමෝම එන්නේ අත්තම්මගෙ ගෙදරට. එයාගෙ අතේ කෑම කෝප්පේ තියෙනවා නම්, කෑම වෙලාව.Aththamma runs the afternoon: after school, everyone comes to her house. When she holds the feeding bowl, it's time to eat.

    සීයා රජයේ රැකියාවෙන් විශ්‍රාම ගිහින්. ඒත් තාමත් ගෙදර ඉඳන් පරීක්ෂණ තියනවා. කවදාවත් කලබල වෙන්නේ නෑ. සීයාගෙ ඉඟියක් ලැබුණොත් ප්‍රශ්නේ විසඳෙනවා.Seeya retired from government service, but he still holds inquiries at home. He never rushes, and a hint from Seeya usually solves the problem.

    කතා කියන මුත්තාGreat-grandfather, the story-keeper

    මුත්තා ළඟ පරණ කතා ගොඩක් තියෙනවා. එක ඇඟිල්ලක් උස්සනවා නම්, කතාවක් පටන් ගන්න යනවා.Muththa keeps the old stories. When he raises one finger, a story is about to begin.
